Sakharov Prize Awarded to Raif Badawi

At the December meeting members were delighted to hear of the decision of the European Parliament to award the 2015 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the Saudi blogger Raif Badawi. The award was set up in 1988 to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. EP President Martin Schulz said “This man, who is an extremely good man and an exemplary good man has had imposed on him one of the most gruesome penalties …… which can only be described as brutal torture.” He added “I call on the King of Saudi Arabia …. to release Mr Badawi back to his wife and to allow him to travel here for the December session to receive this prize”.
