Hundreds of greetings cards were signed by members of the public at the Write for Rights event organised by the Group at the Friends Meeting House on Saturday 25 November. The cards contained messages of support and encouragement to prisoners of conscience across the world and to people courageously fighting against the abuse of human rights.
Visitors watched films about some of the people featured, while enjoying delicious seasonal refreshments.
Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield attended the event and signed a number of cards. She spoke of her high regard for the work of Amnesty International and her support for people seeking justice. Letters were also sent to the Israeli Prime Minister on behalf of 2 human rights defenders detained after a peaceful demonstration in Hebron and to Egyptian President Sisi on behalf of a human rights lawyer working for victims of torture. She had been detained as a ‘spy’ after founding organisations that provide poor women and abuse survivors with legal aid and literacy lessons.
